Welcome to the research project BRIWECS!
Wheat is known by everybody as bread, rolls, pizza, cake or in different other foods. As animal food wheat also plays an important role.
Wheat is used and breed by humans for thousands of years. In Germany wheat is the most common crop and gains the highest ratio of cultivated area. The cultivars that are grown today were bred in the last decades. These cultivars are genetically far away from historic ones.
For many people in the world wheat is the basic food. The expected increase in world population together with extreme weather conditions (servere rain falls, drought periods) and high requirements to the protection of the environment requires new wheat cultivars, which fit well to the future scenarios.
From the developments of the past and wide genetic analysis as well as investigation of the interaction of the stakeholders (breeders, farmers, consumers political and socially conditions) we will give predictions for future wheat cultivars, which will save food supply of the population under changing living conditions.
